I wanted to capture the essence of a peculiar Suburban lifestyle from an eccentric, worrisome, and overly cautious elderly man. My grandfather’s home acts as a time capsule of a mind from one who has survived through the depression era, two wars, and who has struggled to keep up with an ever growing and changing technological world. The home I lived in during college has captured bits and pieces of nostalgia and relics over an extended period of time. Time has not moved within its walls for the last 35 years.
My grandfather’s wife passed in the summer of 2012 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease which overcame her
body in the span of ten years after a stumble down the back steps of our yard. Once she went into a nursing home, my grandfather devoted all of his time and energy to visiting her and became oblivious on the upkeep of his home. He hoarded his and her belongings throughout those years, placed objects in the oddest places, never completed renovations he started, and let papers, magazines, and all sorts of other clutter gather as thoughts of losing her intruded his mind. This assignment will provide my audience of a glimpse of what made up his home environment. These are the things I became accustomed to being around due to living in around the strange antics of my grandfather, as well as the irregular suburban lifestyle which
I and my family have been involved in for the past several years due to living with him in his home. This is my interpretation of a suburban lifestyle.
Note: Nothing in any of these photos was staged or rearranged.
